20/4: Collagraph Inspiration

For my collagraph project I intend to experiment with a number of small animal plates to create a larger composition that contrasts scale between the animals and utilises repetition of plates to print multiple of the same animal in one print. I find the collagraph process lends itself to a rough yet tender and heartful aesthetic quality as seen in the print below.

Catherine O’Neill – Polar Bear Version 1 (2023)

The polar bear prints of Catherine O’Neill are my aesthetic inspiration along with the children’s books of Eric Karle such as Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? (1967) . Eric Karle worked in 2D forms for his books as I will also stick to. The way Karle uses his images to tell stories are also an idea I find interesting for my project.

Thematically I am interested in incorporating the conspiracy theories of UFOs and Cow Mutilations into my work. The pop culture motif of cows being mutilated or abducted by aliens is interesting to me and I would like to depict it in a slightly comedic fashion.
