I cut out a stencil with yupo paper for the mountain silhouette. This layer was to be printed in a solid black to contrast the hazy background, adding depth to the image. Ansel Adams atmospheric landscape photography inspired me for this print due to his balanced monochrome tones and realist landscape depiction.

I was incredibly happy with how this print turned out. The black mountains stood out against the backdrop in the way I envisioned. The Ansel Adams inspiration was realised successfully in terms of translating realist landscape photography to the relatively lo-fi method of monoprint. This will be used as one of my final works for the assignment.

My second backdrop had a more abstract quality to it with it’s large rectangular patches of black. I thus chose to also make the mountains in the foreground unrealistic. Inspired by Nigel Godrich’s album cover for Radiohead’s album Kid A and it’s triangular mountains, I cut out my yupo stencil in a similar fashion. I chose to print the mountains in red as it would contrast against the black backdrop to hopefully generate a foreboding atmosphere. The overall intended atmosphere of the print was to be similar in vein to Peter Booth’s dramatic Painting (1978), which similarly utilises a red colour palette and sharp, triangular mountains.
